Let’s face it. You can’t turn on the television these days without hearing all the buzz on Ozempic, the type 2 diabetes medication being used off label for weight loss and the now popular term “Ozempic face.” But what is Ozempic face?! This term is gaining popularity as a side effect of using the medication and the rapid weight loss that comes with it. The reality is that when we lose a significant amount of weight in a short period of time, we often lose weight in our face, causing laxity, sagging, and gauntness. This is not specific to using the drug though. In fact, any method of weight loss would cause the same effect. These changes are from lack of nutrients to the tissue and a disruption in our normal collagen and elastin metabolism.

What can we do about it?

Dermal Filler such as Juvéderm and Restylane are effective options for changes in facial volume. These popular hyaluronic acid fillers of course are not permanent solutions but can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. Annual maintenance treatments are required.

Sculptra is another effective option. This Poly-L-Lactic Acid works by stimulating natural collagen production, volume, and support to the tissue. Sculptra is an initial series of treatments that can last 2-3 years once you reach your desired outcome. Annual maintenance may be required.

RF Microneedling and Laser Resurfacing treatments are also effective options that can be combined with the injectables listed above to tackle facial aging from all angles. These treatments treat deep and superficial layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production, improve fine lines/wrinkles, and tighten skin.

So… what is “Ozempic face”?! The short answer is just plain facial aging caused by loss of fat, depleted nutrients, and a disruption in our collagen and elastin production. Thankfully we have you covered when it comes to treatment options and getting your skin to shine again!
